Overnight Summer Camps in Tiranë and Korçë

Code.X expanded its proven three-year summer program to Albania in 2019, with local partner alphaPlan. Each student cohort participates in the program for 24 months, with three overnight summer camps and intermediate yearlong instruction. Code for Albania was hosted by Epoka University in Tiranë during its 2019 pilot year. We then took Code for Albania online through the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Code for Albania has since been hosted in the beautiful mountain town of Korçë by the Municipality of Korçë.

Our Approach

Based on stakeholder research, the education system in Albania is lagging in accessible computer science and design opportunities. Moreover, identified preconceptions in Albanian culture tend to steer women away from ICT and STEM fields.

alphaPlan reached out to Code.X for a program that creates a new generation of Albanian coders, capable of solving local problems with a human-centered approach. Code for Albania is based off of Code.X’s proven three-year educational program, where students apply after their first year of high school and graduate before their final year. Code for Albania is committed to diversity and a 1:1 gender ratio, enabling its participants to form new connections and embrace best practices around technology and innovation.

Code for Albania has graduated 3 cohorts of 50+ total students and has been embraced by local sponsors such as the Municipality of Korçë, World Vision Albania, and Epoka University as a crucial educational program for underserved students. The reputation of the program is expanding fast nationally, with increased applicant numbers each year. Student alumni are returning as TAs to invest in the future of Albania's tech industry.

alphaPlan’s vision of 100,000 Coders for Albania 2030 aims to increase the number of coders in the country by advocating four goals:

  • Including computer science from elementary school and setting up the necessary infrastructure.

  • Organizing a national competition and programming fast-track for the most talented youth.

  • Creating accessible coding boot camps for youth who want to enter the tech job market.

  • Providing tech accessibility and internet connection for youth.

AlphaPlan believes that these will give the necessary support to extend the community of coders and also raise its future local leaders.
