Volunteer with Code.X to support Gazan students!
We’re welcoming volunteers in any of the following capacities to help high school and college students in Gaza. Please email jackie@codedotx.org to discuss volunteering.
These positions support Code.X’s ongoing projects in Gaza, such as:
📓 Tutoring or Teaching
We are looking for more volunteers who would like to help Gazan high school and first-year college students study one or more of these subjects:
English essay writing for college applications
English speaking
Tawjihi exam in Palestine and Jordan
ACT exam subjects (English, Math, Reading, Science)
AP exam subjects (Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, etc.)
Computer science or Design thinking topics
If you are interested in tutoring a student 1:1, we will pair you with a student in need. If you are interested in teaching more than one student on a subject, we will support you in coordinating an online class for the time period you can dedicate to teaching and the amount of students you can support. Our volunteers have taught classes anywhere from 6 to 20 weeks this year. Our students really enjoyed their classes and bonding with our volunteer instructors!
Background
Full professional fluency in English.
Prior experience tutoring is required. Volunteers do not need to have professional teaching backgrounds.
🧑🏽🏫 College Application Counseling
We’re welcoming volunteers who would like to dedicate their time to helping a Gazan high school or university student apply for boarding schools and universities across the globe. 1:1 support for students has proven invaluable for helping students navigate their education and lives through this conflict. You’ll have the opportunity to bond with a Gazan student and become their mentor and guide. Because students come to rely on their counselors as a stable source of guidance especially through the Israeli-Gaza conflict, we ask that volunteers commit to counseling a student through the entirety of the college application cycle from now until May 2025 and continue in a supportive role until students enter their schools.
Tasks
Help your student to identify schools and financial aid opportunities to apply to
Help your student compile necessary files like resumes, recommendation letters, and transcripts
Help identify any entrance exams or English proficiency exams your student needs to take. Suggest online courses or tutoring opportunities to help students best prepare.
Work with your student to craft personal statement essays in English
Plan and help your student submit their applications on time
Help your student apply for visas and financial aid after receiving acceptances
Potentially communicate with schools on behalf of your student
Become a reliable source of support for your student, responding with good turnaround time and proactively checking in with your student on a regular basis
Background
Full professional fluency in English.
Volunteers with professional counseling or advising background are preferred. Exceptions can be made for volunteers with strong backgrounds and who have completed at least an undergraduate degree in a diploma program. Please let us know if you have a background that can be helpful in this context.
Our international network of volunteers span almost every continent (Americas, Europe, Middle East, Asia). Please let us know if you have expertise or academic connections in any country or region. You will join an engaged team of counselors and volunteers who actively share opportunities and solutions with each other, so that every counselor-student team can get the support they need, no matter where they are applying.
📝 Tawjihi Curriculum Development
We are looking for volunteers who have taken the Tawjihi college entrance exam in Palestine or Jordan to help us develop a curriculum in Tawjihi subjects. This curriculum will help 11th and 12th grade students, who will not have high school diplomas, to still pass the Tawjihi exam and use their scores for college applications.
⚙️ Program Management & Operations
We are always looking for team members interested in helping build programming across:
College counseling: We are scaling the program beyond 1:1 counselor-student pairings, so that we can help the hundreds of students on our waitlist.
Advocacy: We contact universities and programs across the world to encourage them to create new opportunities for Gazan students.
STEM job preparation: Some of our former students recently graduated from college, and they need assistance applying for STEM jobs across the world.
Partnerships and Outreach: Our Gaza program was born from a partnership between Code.X and Gazan Student Support Network. We also engage many organizations like Coursera, Duolingo, and Outschool to offer free educational opportunities to students.
Fundraising: We fundraise to help students cover basic necessities, purchase internet access for class, pay for classroom instruction, cover financial aid gaps, and more.
📣 Arabic Translation
We are looking for Arabic translators to help us keep up with announcements from current events and the Palestinian Ministry of Education.
🎨 Create your own role
Want to contribute in another capacity? Our entire team is volunteer-initiated, and we’ve been creating our own roles as our team grew and our students’ needs evolved. Let’s talk about it, reach out at jackie@codedotx.org.
